Staffing Cuts Hit Jefferson County Fire & EMS, Response Times To Suffer

MADRAS, OR — Jefferson County Fire & EMS is laying off four employees, including an administration position, citing financial issues.

Fire Chief Blake said recent delays in reapplying for a new tax ID, which happened after the fire department and EMS merged into one organization, resulted in the station being unable to bill anyone for services for 14 months.

“Unfortunately, during that merger, we found out that we were going to lose our revenue. And because we’ve lost our revenue for 14 months, we are in a budget deficit that we’re trying to dig out of right now,” Blake said.
