Memphis City Councilmember Compares Firefighter Raise To Rape As Pay Debate Continues

MEMPHIS, TN — Memphis City Councilwoman Yolanda Cooper-Sutton, on Dec. 2, described the City of Memphis’ financial situation as dire before comparing its relationship with employee associations — commonly referred to as unions — to rape, calling the employee groups “greedy.”

Cooper-Sutton’s comments came as the Memphis City Council was debating a new 2% raise for Memphis firefighters. During the 2024 budget process, the Memphis Fire Fighters Association and city administration signed a memorandum of understanding setting forth two consecutive years of 5% raises.
